Welcome to web pages about the Muriel Family Of Ely

The Muriel family lived in Ely for nearly 200 years. George, the eldest son of Rev John Muriel, rector of Chatteris, arrived in the city around 1750 moving his medical practice from Somersham. He purchased a house on Market Place, and was soon joined by his brother Robert, who had trained as a Surgeon in London. George died young, in 1769, and Robert continued in the Ely practice until his death in 1810.

Robert’s eldest son, Robert (1762-1828), also a Surgeon of Ely, had 16 children and expanded the family practice purchasing a large residence in the High St. Robert was followed in the Ely practice by three of his sons Robert Muriel (1792-1816); Brooke Muriel, who later moved to London; and John Muriel (1799-1884) FRCS.

A well known and highly regarded Surgeon, John would later purchase the large house on the Cathedral green known as “Chantry House” and later “The Chantry”. John would also build "Cathedral House" for his eldest son Robert.

At least 50 members of the family were born and raised in Ely. Their descendants include the authors: Daphne du Maurier and Simon Dewes (John Muriel).
